9. Safe Lifting
and Carrying of Persons or Heavy Objects
Nearly one quarter
of all accidents are caused through people incorrectly lifting and moving
heavy objects and persons.
In most cases it
is caused by a complete lack of knowledge of the basis principles of
safe lifting and carrying.
There are two ways
of lifting – the right way and the wrong way.
ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT
WAY
The wrong way –
This is commonly done by bending the back and keeping the leg muscles
straight. A sure way to cause strain to the spine and stomach, resulting
in either back injury or rupture – or even both!!
The right way –
The muscles in the legs being much stronger, should always be used –
remember the following points:
9.1 Keep the back
straight.
9.2 Bend the knees
to get down on the load.
9.3 Position your
feet correctly. They should be slightly apart, with one foot balanced
slightly in front of the other to ensure proper balance.
9.4 Hold the object
correctly. Never try using just your fingertips, but use the whole of
the fingers and the palms of your hands.
9.5 When lifting
and carrying, always pull the load into your body and
keep your elbows
into your sides.
9.6 Lift the load
by straightening your legs. By tucking your chin in
You assist in straightening
your neck and back – this should be
done prior to commencing
the lift.
These principles
also apply when depositing a heavy load on the ground and should be
applied to pulling / pushing anything.
10. Smoking Policy

10.1 There is a
NO smoking policy enforced at all venues
10.2 Any breach
of this policy will result in disciplinary action.

wounds.

become soiled and
there is a potential risk of passing on
an infection.
12. Working at heights:
Reaching etc.
12.1 Do not attempt
to obtain items , which are beyond your reach. If
you cannot reach
– get a ladder or stepping stool. Be sure the
ladder is in a
safe condition . Do not climb up the shelves them-
selves. Do not
overreach on the ladder, it is safer to get down and
move the ladder.
13. Fire.
If you DISCOVER
a fire:
13.1 All staff /
patrons to report at assembly point.
13.2 Management
will detail someone to inform the fire services
13.3 Roll call to
be taken to ensure that all staff within the venue have
been accounted
for.
13.4 At all times
